What are primary and secondary opportunities?

A curator/pro’s primary opportunity is their bread-and-butter offering — essentially, what they signed up on the platform to do. It reflects their highest-impact opportunity and matches with their Curator Type.

  • Ex: A Playlist Curator’s primary opportunity is always “Add to Spotify playlist”

  • Ex: A Label’s primary opportunity is always “Sign or release music”

A secondary opportunity is generally less impactful, and should be used sparingly (a curator’s focus should always be on giving primary opportunities). It’s less reflective of a curator/pro’s Type.

  • Ex: A Playlist Curator may give a secondary opportunity by adding an artist to their Instagram story

  • Ex: A Label may give a secondary opportunity by adding an artist to their Spotify playlist

When should a curator/pro give a primary vs secondary opportunity?

As mentioned above, you should always be trying to give primary opportunities, since that is generally why artists are contacting you — it can leave them frustrated and confused, for example, if they submit to radio station to get airplay, but instead only get added to a playlist.

Since your Curator Type corresponds to your primary opportunity, it follows that the secondary opportunities you give will be less impactful for artists, which is why we want to minimize their use and maximize primary opportunities.

Even so, a secondary opportunity can be used in one of these cases:

  1. A curator/pro loves a track so much that they want to give the artist a secondary opportunity in addition to a primary opportunity, thus supporting them in multiple ways.

  2. A curator/pro likes a track enough that they want to support the artist, but not to the extent that they want to give them a primary opportunity.

  3. The curator/pro believes one of their secondary opportunities is a better fit for what the artist is looking for (e.g. a Playlist Curator adds an artist to their story, since the artist says they are looking specifically to increase their reach on social media).

How does this get communicated to artists?

When an artist receives an opportunity in their artist dashboard, they’ll be able to tell whether they received what type of opportunity they received via a green “Primary” tag (or lack thereof):

How will this change the curator/pro workflow?

If you give secondary opportunities, then when you receive a track, you’ll see two sections corresponding to giving primary opportunities, secondary opportunities, or both. You’ll be able to check off multiple options if you’d like to give more than 1 opportunity for the same track.

An example of what a Label & Playlist Curator might see when receiving a new track.

How can a curator/pro update the opportunities they provide?

If you want to change the secondary opportunities you can provide, go to Edit Profile and scroll to the Opportunities section. Ensure your Opportunities description is also up-to-date — we recommend checking this once every few months to ensure it’s still accurate.

Primary opportunities cannot be changed since they’re linked to your Curator Type.

If you believe you can give multiple kinds of highly impactful opportunities, it’s worth discussing with our Curators Team whether you qualify for an additional Curator Type (or whether you should change your existing Curator Type). You can also fill out the Typeform here to ask to change your Curator Type, but please note that not all requests are guaranteed, and may take some time to be vetted by our team.

  • Ex: If you’re a Playlist Curator with 5K listeners/mo. to your main playlist, and you have an Instagram account with heavy engagement (e.g. >10K followers with an engagement rate between 3-5%), you may qualify to be Social Media Influencer as well.

If you’re ever not sure about what qualifies as an impactful opportunity or what your Curator Type should be, you can always feel free to discuss with our Curators Team (curators@groover.co).
